Poor; Dirt Poor

I figured out a long time ago that my nutrition wasn’t good.  And I used to believe that taking lots of vitamins was the answer for bad nutrition.  Truth be told, pills can’t make up for what nature intended.  At the very least, if you are taking vitamins, please be sure that they are from whole foods sources and not petro chemicals.  If  you or your children are taking whole foods supplements with your meals, then you will assimilate them better.  Just sayin’.

I have heard many a doctor on many an occasion say to take a supplement if it makes me feel better about myself, but not necessarily recommend them or purport any benefit was derived from supplementing our SAD diet (Standard American Diet) with whole food supplements.

BUT—–is a regular diet ENOUGH?  I don’t think so!  But WHY?

Because we are dirt dirt dirt poor!

The Organic Consumers Association cites several studies: A Kushi Institute analysis of nutrient data from 1975 to 1997 found that our nutritional levels of food, being fruits and vegetables have decline steadily over the last century and more so recently:

  • average calcium levels in 12 fresh vegetables dropped 27 percent;
  • iron levels 37 percent;
  • vitamin A levels 21 percent,
  • vitamin C levels 30 percent.

A similar study of British nutrient data from 1930 to 1980, published in the British Food Journal,found that in 20 vegetables that the

  • average calcium content had declined 19 percent;
  • iron 22 percent;
  • potassium 14 percent.

“Yet another study concluded that one would have to eat eight oranges today to derive the same amount of Vitamin A as our grandparents would have gotten from one.”

Common sense says that if you ARE what you EAT…and what we EAT contains less nutrition…then we will eventually become deficient nutritionally.

“THE number one reason that most people are mineral deficient is soil depletion, which has been well documented since the US Senate made their study back in 1936. Even organically grown vegetables are lacking in minerals — organic farming only addresses the pesticide/chemical issues most typically. The best way to get mineral rich grown fruits and vegetables is through bio-dynamic produce, local CSA’s that practice crop rotation and soil supplementation through compost and other means, and of course growing your own garden you can work on the integrity of the soil. Not to mention, the animals we consume also need to be raised on good quality pastures with good soil conditions as well.”

Do you ever just go to the refrigerator and open it LOOKING for something that your body needs?  I do, all the time.  It’s a hunt; until I find just the right thing to satisfy that “thing” that my body DEMANDS I give it, and it’s a stalemate until I do.  Often I just go to bed without the desire satisfied.  It’s time to start giving our engines the good fuel we need!

Until next time,

Guest Podcast with Kandas Rodarte

My mom said ‘you can only count your true friends on one hand’.  I’m not sure that is entirely true because I have more than 5 friends, but only a few intimates. In essence your life’s true friends are really rare and if you have them be sure to make them feel appreciated!

I met Kandas Rodarte at a local farmer’s market 5 years ago and when I met her, it was as though we had known each other for a long time.   She is a fellow small business owner, and if you are one of those, you share a parallel with fellow entrepreneurs that others cannot fathom.   But back to Kandas…she is just that kind of person.  Instantly enamored and likeable with Kandas’ charm and open style of communication,  we became comrades and friends.

Kandas recorded a class I taught recently.  Without her help, and excellent recording skills, I wouldn’t have this archive.  She was thoughtful enough to show up, show up early, bring some high definition recording equipment and microphone,  hook me up, do the testing and record this class for me.  I am so grateful!!!  I’m sharing it with you and it is very valuable information 😉

Take a listen, and I want to recommend Kandas to you as a Relationship Marketing Strategist.  She can teach you about relationship marketing, and help you grow your business in umpteen million way.   <3 you, Kandas!!!

Hop on over to Kandas’ blog, and take a listen now!

Let Thy Food be Thy Medicine

We’ve now establihealing-leavesshed the foundation upon which to build; that we need a healthy, living, dynamic relationship with nature all around us.  We need the sustenance that plants, nature, air, water, and nutrition from these plants provides.

In my last post we discussed Eating the rainbow.  God said this when He set man in the garden and gave him some guidelines for his best health and life:

“Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” Gen 2:16

There was a plethora from which to choose and such an abundance! Whatever man desired and was good for food was available and delightful.   God also said:

“Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs.”   Gen 9:3

One of my favorite Scriptures EVER is in Revelations:

“In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”  Revelations 22:2

The foundation has been laid, of nutrition through green herbs and living plants and yes, in my opinion, also animals.

The late great Hippocrates said, HippocratesQuote

But what of our modern fruits and vegetables?  Are they sufficient to sustain life and promote a quality of wellness?  What of modern farming techniques, industry, additives, pesticides, soil, droughts, famines etc?  Is there quality enough to be medicinal let alone life sustaining?  Stay tuned for more , friends!

Pay the Grocer or Pay the Doctor

“Pay the grocer or pay the doctor.”

The old FDA pyramid, used for over 20 was finally overhauled and removed and a new My Plate guidelines established mid year 2011.

That is good news for those of us who THOUGHT we were eating right by consuming tons and tons of pasta, wheat, cereals, grains, etc.  As evidenced by the comical figure above, those of us who battle the bulge are now finding out what we were taught to think all along was somehow now erroneous.

In fact, whereas we were told that we should have 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, now the thought and research is showing that instead we should be consuming 5 – 9 servings of fruits and veggies….every, single day.   These guidelines have been changed and recommended not only for health and longevity, but for the prevention of cancer and other disease.

Take out your hand, make a fist.  See the size of that?  That is the size of a serving of vegetables, more or less.  Imagine 5 – 9 servings of that?  Do  you do that?  I know it takes considerable effort for me to get that much down me in a regular busy day like I have!

So back to the basics, right?  Back to the garden, back to basic fruits and vegetable, and back to the rainbow 😉

It is said among nutritionists, that the brightly colored fruits and vegetables  have the most nutrients designed to pack a powerful antioxidant punch to your body.

Tip: when going grocery shopping………

  • don’t go hungry or you’ll buy the store
  • stay in the outside perimeter of the store….the produce, meat, dairy and whole foods aisles.  Think foods that are not packaged but are as near as whole for a fresher more alive diet.

So eat up, and stay hungry my friends!

Until next time,

Oh Eden, how far are you fallen!

the freshness of tender leaves, petals, seeds, roots
freshness of tender leaves, petals, seeds, peels, bark, & roots

We were

  • Created to live forever
  • Created to enjoy abundant health
  • Created in a perfect environment
  • Created to live in vitality

It doesn’t take a PhD to know that we are not enjoying any of these above elements to even a small degree…without significant effort.  It  is painful, labor-intensive, all-consuming and bothersome.  After all, we must work to eat!   And sometimes, even our heroic efforts net less than a measurable amount of fulfillment for all the effort put in.

But we must believe that even the smallest of our efforts WILL profit us if we do not faint and give up!

There is a direct correlation between the level of toxins in our environment and our emotional, physical and even spiritual wellness.

The gruesome details speak for themselves.  As a culture we are sicker than ever, and  Big Government, Big Pharma and Big Agra have thwarted our best efforts….more on that later!

As consumers, it’s time to take matters back  into our own hands, and get back to the garden…where our nutrients, aromas, clarity, beauty, focus, and life originated from!

Are you ready?  I know that I am! There’s so much that we can do to begin to immediately enjoy better health that we know is available to us today!!!!  <3  Be encouraged!

You are designed to enjoy vibrant health!

“Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease”.  Hippocrates

As a person who believes the Creation account, this forms a premise upon which to build.   When God made man, and was finished with His task of His ultimate creation, he said four words…..”It is VERY good.”  He was pleased, and celebrated His creation. Indeed man was made in the image and likeness of God.

Our bodies are truly miraculous!  There are almost no body parts which cannot regenerate if given the proper building blocks.

  • Your skin regenerates every 28 days,
  • endometrial cells regenerate every 28 days,
  • human sperm regenerate every 74 days,
  • Red cells 120 days
  • Platelets 10 days
  • Neutrophils 4-5 days
  • Fat cells 8 years
  • 103455 Cardiomyocytes 1-0.45% per year/7-32% per year.

The following systems can also be regenerated;  beta cells, liver cells, cardiac cells, nerve cells,  hormones, and Cartilage/Joint/Spine. Also this includes your brain!  Indeed, new cells are dying each day in our body and regrowing new cells.

But doesn’t it make sense that in order to fuel this regeneration, we must provide the necessary building blocks?  And equally so, doesn’t it make sence that pollutants can indeed impair, impede or even destroy and effectively shut down this process?

Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine was in reality an ancient physician, but natural healers the world over ascribe to his doctrines of healing and wellness.  His teachings brought stability to a world awash with bloodletters and other assorted “healers” of his day.

Know this; in order to have wellness we must have vitality. In order to have vitality we must give our bodies the foundation of vitality.  The foundations of vitality are the plants; flora, fauna, atmosphere and pure water that God provided on this earth to help sustain our life.

I promise you, this is going somewhere, but I want to lay a foundation first. 😉

What the HECK is Symbiotic Mutualism

fungus living in symbiosis with the roots of a vascular plant

“A World is not an ideology nor a scientific institution, nor is it even a system of ideologies; rather, it is a structure of unconscious relations and symbiotic processes.” William Irwin Thompson

There’s no doubt about it; man is in relationship with the earth around him.  I believe the Creation account of man being put in a Garden somewhere in Eden where he was mandated to rule the earth and to manage, administer, guard and cultivate his environment.  As such, that life in the garden was perfect; being whole, undisturbed, in an ambient temperature perfect for replication of all the flora and fauna present in the perfect genome-form; unaltered, and in original DNA.  The ancient soil was perfect,  no disruption of gamma rays or any kind of  electromagnetic spectrum impact upon us to disturb homeostasis.  No floods washed away nutrients, no droughts killed off species, and abundance was EVERYWHERE. Can you imagine?  I would give my eye teeth to have seen that!

Man is in a symbiotic relationship with his environment.  At first, I was tempted to say that man’s symbiosis with his environment was one-way; that nature does not need man for sustainability. We seem to be wreaking havoc wherever we go.   But indeed in my present world view; I truly now disagree with my original premise; for as man was mandated once to rule and bring creation into submission, and that mandate has not changed and he will again fulfill his destiny to do just that.

Man———-> Inhales Air————> Absorbs Oxygen———> Exhales; extracting———>CO2

Plants—————> Respire Air——————> Absorb CO2———————–> Exhale Oxygen

For you science geeks out there, I know this is probably just a gross over simplification of a very complex matter, but for illustration purposes, please bear with me 😉

The above a win/win for both of us. In fact, it is a necessity!   Of course factories….well, that’s another matter.  That’s also why historically, deforestation causes imminent drought in those areas, topographically. DUH!

Fact:  having houseplants in your home will clean the air and improve the quality of life for you!!!  Will your home provide quality of life for the plant?  Probably not 😉

I have not studies vibrational theories just yet, but it’s fascinating to consider this in terms of modalities as well 😉  One day, maybe.  If I can prove that the premise is right, then maybe I can believe it.

The point of all this is, we need plants.  Not only to sustain us, but to aid us in our environment.   I hope that you will consider this…and not worry about being a tree hugger.  Sit Under a Tree

Maybe they WERE onto something 😉

Until next time,

With Love,

Why, part 3

“Start with Why in everything you do.” Simon Sinek

Do you know your Why? The purpose, cause, or belief that inspires you to do what you do?

In Simon Sinek’s work Start With Why he speaks about any worthy work or cause needs to extract the value of WHY before proceeding further.  This is my WHY!

In my last post, and the one before that, I spoke about that….Now we got THAT out of the way – we can proceed onto the subjects at hand.

I am very passionate about this, and as I write, it feels like a healing catharsis for me.   And my WHY is way bigger than my WHAT!  I guess that’s a good thing; although it can be messy at times.  More on that later.

The FACTS are this; despite all of our advancements, all of our technology, all of our science, and research, and funding, and hype, and colleges, and healthcare (dot) gov, we are still just as sick as ever.   I am sure  that you do not need me to cite all the statistics; just take a casual walk or drive through your neighborhood; look at the pharmacies lining the streets, watch the commercials…ludicrous as they are  (cases of cancer, lymphoma, increased chances for stroke or death may occur while taking this XYZ Rx) OMG! why would you even want to risk  your safety when those disclaimers are presented to you?

The thing that hurts me so much is even trying to find a place to park at any local clinic in my community.  Sometimes when I actually find a place, I just sit there and watch the constant streams of people…endless shuffling people.   So many infirm, so many who have to use their walkers, and canes, and the lines at the pharmacy! Old people sick people tired old souls!  All of them obviously in pain, and not enjoying life or quality of life.  People place all their hopes in a prescription, in a system that is broken.  Whose insurance will not pay for a test that could save their life but will not have that test because it is expensive.

Drugs = Risks

The thing of it is, oftentimes, the answer is just as close as their own kitchen garden, or grocery produce aisle, or even just the sunshine outdoors and some fresh air.

Imagine…..a world where plants play a dynamic and vital role in our health and wellbeing!

Until later,

With Love,

Why, part 2

As mentioned in my last post, childhood had a pretty dark shadow cast over it.  Being a first born, I saw two brothers pass away; one when I was three, and the next when I was nine.   My third brother was born premature and it seemed either my mom, or one of my brothers was always in the hospital.

images (3)

When we lived in Arcadia, my beautiful baby brother Sean began vomiting frequently.  My dad took him to the doctor numerous times, and the pediatrician tried to comfort and reassure my father;  passing it off as childhood growing pains.  I will never forget my Dad holding my brother in his arms while Sean vomited yet again, and my Dad yelling at my Mom to get the doctor on the phone.  My Dad in his Irish temper; telling him under no uncertain terms, ‘get my son in for a GI series TOMORROW or I will have your medical license.’  Indeed an upper and lower GI series on my dear beautiful brother revealed an advanced case of liposarcoma of the stomach.  Subsequently, Sean underwent three surgeries, extensive radiation, and devastating chemotherapy.  Cut, poison, and burn, was not effective in his case.  Eleven short months later,  Sean passed away at St. Lukes Hospital in Pasadena, Ca on March 6, 1966.   My parents were devastated.  And I lost my very best friend.  From family photos,  you can see my parents’ hair color go from black to almost completely white in the next year family photos.  My mom was pregnant with my little sister as Sean lay in the hospital bed fighting for his life.

There is no way that you can go through this kind of trauma but to decide on some very core values.  My value and core decision was this:  medicine, modern as it purports to be, is not the answer for me nor my family.  I had to find something that fit in my core modality that made sense to me, and which seemed in line with the nature I viewed around me.

I began a passionate pursuit of health at age 9, and  have never looked back.  Desiring and believing that God created us wonderfully, and locked into our genes the mechanism to acquire and retain wellness, is my core values and decision.  Finding the keys to unlocking this, has been my lifelong quest.

Until later,

With Love,
