I figured out a long time ago that my nutrition wasn’t good. And I used to believe that taking lots of vitamins was the answer for bad nutrition. Truth be told, pills can’t make up for what nature intended. At the very least, if you are taking vitamins, please be sure that they are from whole foods sources and not petro chemicals. If you or your children are taking whole foods supplements with your meals, then you will assimilate them better. Just sayin’.
I have heard many a doctor on many an occasion say to take a supplement if it makes me feel better about myself, but not necessarily recommend them or purport any benefit was derived from supplementing our SAD diet (Standard American Diet) with whole food supplements.
BUT—–is a regular diet ENOUGH? I don’t think so! But WHY?
Because we are dirt dirt dirt poor!
The Organic Consumers Association cites several studies: A Kushi Institute analysis of nutrient data from 1975 to 1997 found that our nutritional levels of food, being fruits and vegetables have decline steadily over the last century and more so recently:
- average calcium levels in 12 fresh vegetables dropped 27 percent;
- iron levels 37 percent;
- vitamin A levels 21 percent,
- vitamin C levels 30 percent.
A similar study of British nutrient data from 1930 to 1980, published in the British Food Journal,found that in 20 vegetables that the
- average calcium content had declined 19 percent;
- iron 22 percent;
- potassium 14 percent.
“Yet another study concluded that one would have to eat eight oranges today to derive the same amount of Vitamin A as our grandparents would have gotten from one.”
Common sense says that if you ARE what you EAT…and what we EAT contains less nutrition…then we will eventually become deficient nutritionally.
“THE number one reason that most people are mineral deficient is soil depletion, which has been well documented since the US Senate made their study back in 1936. Even organically grown vegetables are lacking in minerals — organic farming only addresses the pesticide/chemical issues most typically. The best way to get mineral rich grown fruits and vegetables is through bio-dynamic produce, local CSA’s that practice crop rotation and soil supplementation through compost and other means, and of course growing your own garden you can work on the integrity of the soil. Not to mention, the animals we consume also need to be raised on good quality pastures with good soil conditions as well.”
Do you ever just go to the refrigerator and open it LOOKING for something that your body needs? I do, all the time. It’s a hunt; until I find just the right thing to satisfy that “thing” that my body DEMANDS I give it, and it’s a stalemate until I do. Often I just go to bed without the desire satisfied. It’s time to start giving our engines the good fuel we need!
